Data Visualisation Designer
The Ensembl Project is looking for a talented and experienced Senior Data Visualisation Designer to work on the Ensembl project at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory's European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) located on the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK.
Genomics is one of the fastest growing areas of science and a field with huge contributions to make towards human health, food security and climate change. Ensembl is one of the world's leading resources for genomic research and is accessed by thousands of researchers from around the globe every day.
Your work in this role will define how we conceptualise and visualise data to maximise benefit to our users - scientific, medical, and agricultural researchers - as they navigate and explore big genomic data. We encourage you to be creative, bring design ideas that are both functional and beautiful, and apply the best of your data visualisation experience to this domain.
As a key member of the Genomics Technology Infrastructure team you will play a leading role in the redevelopment of the Ensembl website as you:
- Evaluate and design new web interfaces and visualisations for the Ensembl project and related resources
- Direct the concept phase of new web interfaces and data visualisations
- Design wider site concepts and ensure that our web interfaces and visualisations follow these concepts to deliver an effective user experience
- Work closely with front end developers to deliver proposed visualisations
- Engage with internal and external users during design and implementation phases
- Analyse new interfaces to ensure they conform to guidelines, are fit for purpose, and enhance the overall experience and usefulness of the site
- Engage with other data presentation experts at EMBL-EBI and with the world-wide biological data visualisation community at external meetings and events (VIZBI, BioVis, BiVI)
The offered grade will be commensurate with experience and qualifications of the candidate.
At EMBL-EBI, we help scientists realise the potential of 'big data' in biology by enabling them to exploit complex information to make discoveries that benefit mankind. Working for EMBL-EBI gives you an opportunity to apply your skills and energy for the greater good. As part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), we are a non-profit, intergovernmental organisation funded by 22 member states and two associate member states and proud to be an equal-opportunity employer. We are located on the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK, and our 600 staff are engineers, technicians, scientists and other professionals from all over the world.Qualifications and Experience
Applicants should have a first degree or higher qualification.
You will bring significant experience working in interface design and/or a data visualisation centric role with a demonstrable ability to take solutions from concept through to implementation. Appropriate experience may have been in any combination of commercial, production or academic research settings.
Previous experience of working with biological data would be advantageous but not essential.
As an excellent communicator, you will have a talent for communicating design ideas and concepts to a range of audiences and the teamwork skills to work closely with others to shape and implement these ideas. The candidate should understand the principles of interaction design and how they apply to web interfaces. Attention to detail is essential.
Please submit portfolios of your data visualisation work with your application. During the selection process we will be looking to understand the type of processes you follow, how you involve others, and what tools you use.
