EMBL-EBI is a world-leader in archiving and disseminating 3D biomacromolecular and cellular structure data. The Cellular Structure & 3D Bioimaging team plays a key role in the dissemination of 3DEM data through the EMDB (emdb-empiar.org) and EMPIAR (empiar.org) public archives. We develop and provide advanced tools and web-resources for searching, analyzing and visualizing structural data for the benefit of structural biologists and the wider scientific community. The team consists of an international and inter-disciplinary mix of professionals (scientists and IT specialists) and we are looking to augment the team with a scientific programmer who can help develop and improve our EM validation resources.
The post holder will:
- contribute to the development of EM validation resources (e.g., EM validation reports and stand-alone validation web-services such as a map/model FSC server).
- in a joint project with Dr Garib Murshudov, MRC-LMB, perform structural data-mining of 3DEM maps in EMDB with the aim of deriving canonical 3D density motifs that can be used for validation and analysis.
At EMBL-EBI, we help scientists realise the potential of 'big data' in biology by enabling them to exploit complex information to make discoveries that benefit mankind. Working for EMBL-EBI gives you an opportunity to apply your skills and energy for the greater good. As part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), we are a non-profit, intergovernmental organisation funded by 23 member states and two associate member states and proud to be an equal-opportunity employer. We are located on the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK, and our 600 staff are engineers, technicians, scientists and other professionals from all over the world.Qualifications and Experience
Applicants should have a Masters/PhD degree in a structural biology related field (e.g., X-ray crystallography, NMR and 3DEM) and at least one years experience in software development (preferably related to a structural biology project). Applicants should have a good understanding of the image formation and image processing concepts in at least one structural field and be prepared to learn relevant concepts for the project.
Excellent written and oral communication skills, fluency in English, ability to work in a team, and attention to detail are required. The position may require occasional travel, mainly in the UK.
EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation. The remuneration package comprises a competitive salary, a comprehensive pension scheme and health insurance, educational and other family related benefits where applicable, as well as financial support for relocation and installation.
We have an informal culture, international working environment and excellent professional development opportunities but one of the really amazing things about us is the concentration of technical and scientific expertise - something you probably won't find anywhere else.
If you've ever visited the campus you'll have experienced first-hand our friendly, collegial and supportive atmosphere, set in the beautiful Cambridgeshire countryside. Our staff also enjoy excellent sports facilities including a gym, a free shuttle bus, an on-site nursery, caf??s and restaurant and a library.
