As the Cell Culture and Bioreactor Scientist you will be part of a team responsible for the development of high-yielding mammalian cell line cell culture and bioreactor processes suitable for scale up for clinical trials supply of MedImmune products.

You will play an important role in supporting the different activities of the team to support ongoing and new candidate drug projects. This is a 12 month Fixed Term Contract (FTC) within the Biopharmaceutical Development department.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

You will plan and perform cell culture and bioreactor experiments to support the ongoing candidate drug projects within a project plan. To enable this, tasks include:

  • Routine maintenance / passage of cell cultures
  • Preparing, planning and operating shake flask experiments
  • Preparing, planning and operating small scale-bioreactor experiments
  • Cryopreservation of small scale cell banks
  • Writing up experiments, reports and supporting documentation as required to meet project deadlines
  • Preparing and giving presentations to update relevant teams on project progress

As part of your role, you will identify, develop and implement improvements to the cell culture and bioreactor processes to support the development of productive processes for MedImmune products This will include the evaluation of innovative new technologies (e.g. scale-down systems) and materials (e.g. cell culture media and feeds). You will also liaise with other teams at MedImmune (e.g. media prep, Bioreactor assembly, Line manager, Project manager) to achieve the project goals.

You will implement and promote MedImmune Cambridge's health and safety practices including the regulations governing COSHH, biological agents and genetically modified organisms as detailed in relevant MedImmune Cambridge risk assessments.

Additional responsibilities include

  • Liaising with other groups at the Cambridge site and also internationally to apply new developments to future projects, both with the expression technology but also with novel protein product formats.
  • Demonstrating the value of MedImmune Cambridge technology by presenting scientific information to team members and colleagues

Essential requirements

  • Degree in a biological sciences subject with relevant practical laboratory experience
  • Experience in mammalian cell culture and protein expression in an industrial or academic environment (CHO cell culture preferred).
  • Experience with bioreactor systems for mammalian suspension cell culture (micro-scale to bench scale).
  • Initiative, proactive, good communicator, team player and excellent scientific methodology
  • High level of attention to detail
  • Good organisation and planning skills
  • Able to operate independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to effectively troubleshoot.
  • Interest in continuous improvement of the technology

Desirable requirements

  • PhD in a relevant biological / bioprocessing sciences subject.
  • Experience or knowledge in one or more of the areas of media and process development, cell metabolism/biochemistry or biochemical engineering.
