Crops that are more resilient to adverse environmental conditions and have a higher nutrient use efficiency (NUE) are required to address climate change-related problems and ensure sustainability of agricultural production systems. Access to diverse genetic resources and an ever-increasing sequence information now facilitate the identification of novel genes and alleles that can be tested for their effectiveness in conferring tolerance to e.g., heat or drought, or improving nitrogen and phosphorus-use efficiency.

We are looking for a highly motivated Postdoc to contribute to this overall goal by screening available diverse genetic materials for relevant traits and conducting physiological and molecular analyses to elucidate the underlying genes and pathways. For a set of available candidate genes, in-depth analysis are required, including identification of allelic variants in wheat and rice, mutant screens and generation of transgenic plants, including gene editing if applicable.

This position requires a PhD in plant molecular biology, genetics or related field with an excellent understanding of plant development, physiology and molecular biology. Experience in working with crops (rice, wheat) in the area of NUE and/or abiotic stress tolerance is required, as well as experience in wheat bioinformatics. RRS has in-house capacity in the relevant areas to support this post.

Excellent data management and analysis skills are required, as well as excellent writing skills with a number of publications in peer reviewed journals appropriate for the level of seniority.

Good communication skills and cultural awareness is required for working in the international research environment at Rothamsted Research.

The role holder is expected to carry out the duties listed below and any other duties reasonably required by the line manager or Institute, commensurate with the grade and level of responsibility for this post.
