As a Senior Research Scientist, Mechanistic Biology and profiling in Cambridge, UK, you will play a pivotal role in channelling our scientific capabilities to make a positive impact on changing patients' lives. IMED (Innovative Medicines and Early Development) focuses on scientific advances in small molecules, oligonucleotides and other emerging technologies and drug discovery platforms across our focus areas. The Mechanistic Biology and Profiling team, within the Discovery Sciences Department, is a multi-disciplinary team committed to delivering biochemical and cellular assays, SAR and mechanistic characterisation to support projects in all phases of the drug discovery process.

The Mechanistic Biology and Profiling team has an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated and talented Biochemist/Enzymologist. The successful candidate will make key contributions to the progression of Oncology and Neuroscience drug discovery programs in a highly collaborative environment.

Main Duties and Responsibilities include:

As a Senior Research Scientist, Mechanistic Biology you will be responsible for independent delivery of mechanistic characterisation of protein targets, compound mode of action studies and quantitative compound profiling. You will have the opportunity to participate actively on

Drug Discovery Project Teams; contributing data interpretation, novel mechanistic insights and using creativity and knowledge to deliver impact. Collaboration on multi-disciplinary teams to relate in vitro mechanistic insights to in-cell target occupancy and In vivo PK/PD observations will be an important part of your role. You will maintain vigilant awareness of the most recent scientific literature and innovative technologies that may enable advances in drug discovery approaches. Achievement of external scientific visibility through poster & oral conference presentations and authorship on peer-reviewed publications will also be important.

Essential Requirements

  • Ph.D in Enzymology, Pharmacology, or a related discipline or a BSc/MSc degree with significant relevant experience, preferably in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry.
  • Proven expertise in mechanistic enzymology and the application of biochemical assays to deliver mechanistic insight into compound mode of action.
  • Experience of a wide range of biochemical assay methods and technologies (for example fluorescence, luminescence and mass spectrometry) as applied to a range of biological targets.
  • Demonstrated ability to critically analyze data and communicate data interpretation and relevance to biological parameters clearly.
  • Excellent problem solving skills, not limited to own area of expertise.
  • Proven ability to collaborate with internal and external partners to achieve objectives. Ability to interact with people at all levels, enjoy working as part of team and have an innovative, flexible and enthusiastic approach to your work.

Desirable Requirements

  • A practical understanding of biophysical techniques and their application in drug discovery.
  • Protein analytical skills (e.g. gel electrophoresis, Western blotting, and size exclusion chromatography)
