Shape the news at the heart of central government

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) is a fantastic place in which to base your career. Dealing with everything from safeguarding the UK's food and drink supplies to improving the environment, our stories are of huge public interest - which is where you come in. Ensuring our stories are top of the agenda for newspapers and TV bulletins, plus trending on social media, this is a unique opportunity to promote high profile government issues to the right audiences - and put your career on the road to success in the process.

Joining us in our Whitehall, Westminster press office, you will be tasked with conveying DEFRA policies, activities and success stories to the media at large. You can expect to create and deliver campaigns that will span broadcast, print and online media, fully supported by social media. Working closely with Ministers and their offices, you will offer media handling advice and come up with relevant strategies to target a variety of audiences with engaging content. You can expect to brief journalists on news stories, plus arrange interviews with Ministers and handle publicity surrounding events and speeches.

This enticing role is as dynamic as it is fast-paced. We are therefore looking for experienced communication professionals who are willing to join our out-of-hours duty rota. Politically savvy, you will have fantastic verbal and written communication skills, with a good knowledge of all types of traditional, online and social media, including emerging trends.

In turn, we can offer an enticing package that includes a generous pension scheme, good holiday entitlement, and all the support you need to achieve your career aspirations. During the selection process we will assess your knowledge of Ideas, Impact, Implementation and Insight - all in relation to press and media - so demonstrate your extensive understanding and innovative ideas and we'll find a place for you at the heart of the team.

Where else could you find yourself shaping a media response to a farming issue, handling a Secretary of State visit, or guiding news journalists around flood defences - and drumming up a sense of excitement in the process? It's challenges like this that keep us on our toes - and we'd relish the opportunity to bring your fresh ideas and dynamic strategic thinking into the team.
