Automation Scientist (Next Generation DNA Sequencing)

Permanent / Full time, Cambridge UK

Illumina are the world leaders in Next Generation DNA Sequencing (NGS) solutions; providing innovative hardware, software and reagents that have allowed the power of genomics to impact on a wide variety of industry sectors. As part of our ongoing mission to create transformative and robust NGS workflows, the Research & Technology Development (RTD) group are looking for an Automation Scientist to take on some of the exciting and novel liquid handling projects currently underway at Illumina.

We are looking for candidates with expertise in developing, troubleshooting and innovating around automated assay systems who want to create cutting edge sample processing workflows for NGS applications.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a scientist with a strong automation background to become the RTD group automation expert and ultimately an automation leader at Illumina.

Key duties:

  • To develop novel sample handling methods/protocols on bespoke liquid handling systems
  • Troubleshoot both novel and current automation methods for NGS library preparation
  • Generate proof of concept data to support new automation protocols and their integration into Illumina's workflows
  • Liaise with technology development teams to provide lab automation expertise
  • Research and innovate new library preparation methods and their integration on automated platforms

Experience/skills required:

  • Minimum of a BSc in a scientific discipline
  • Proven experience of working with lab automation, including optimisation and troubleshooting
  • Experience of programming automated liquid handling systems
  • Strong communicator as we expect this person to become the single point of contact for automation for RTD at the EMEA site
  • Ability to work autonomously


  • Knowledge of the Hamilton line of liquid handling platforms
  • Knowledge/experience of NGS
  • Knowledge/experience in molecular biology
  • Experience of high throughput laboratory working practices

This role would suit a scientist/technologist who has a flair for automation and who takes an innovative approach to transferring manual benchtop processes to high throughput automated workflows.
